In early February 2021, MSM Higher Ed launched its very own educational pathways for international students – the MSM Higher Ed Pathways initiative. In Episode 11 of “View From The Forest”—a series of insightful videos featuring MSM Higher Ed president Donna Hooker—the seasoned educator discussed the value of pathway programs for international higher education institutions and international students. She also shared how MSM Higher Ed Pathways fits right in the middle of things.
Key Points at a Glance
- The pandemic brought with it more opportunities for interregional studies.
- Pathway programs help students gain international credentials from home, among many other things.
- MSM Higher Ed Pathways enables students to start their studies near home and to end their studies abroad.
- MSM Higher Ed is inviting universities to be a part of its Global Consortium of 26 Founding Members or schools to be one of 50 planned Study Centres around the world.
“If there’s one thing the pandemic has taught us, it might be: ‘don’t rely on a single big market for your survival,” said Donna, adding that these times may present more opportunities for interregional studies.
“While Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States might still be the most desirable destinations for study abroad, students might be seeking options much closer to home,” she said.
The pandemic allowed both institution and student to better realize the advantages of remote online learning, as there are now opportunities to “earn an international credential” while students “stay at home for the whole program” or “begin their studies at home and then complete their credential abroad.”
All these and more, are made possible through pathways. Generally speaking, because of these pathways programs, students will enjoy the benefit of saving on potential international travel and living expenses, and institutions will be in a better position to accept international students and at the same time, increase student diversity.
At the end of the video, Donna invited interested university decision makers around the world to enroll their institutions into becoming a Founding Member-Partner University or one of the Study Centres of the MSM Higher Ed Pathways initiative.
“The initiative features 26 Founding Member-Partner Universities that will join a Global Consortium,” she said, and added that “it also includes the planned delivery of MSM Higher Ed curriculum in over 50 Study Centres across the globe.”
“Together, we can create a strong capacity for international students’ success.”
